Secion 4 - Society

This section is perhaps one of the more interesting parts of the project in my opinion.
Below is a link to a short slideshow / movie which I created to explain how society has been shaped due to the developments in hardware. (I decided to do this so that the project doesn't become repetitive!)

How has Software shaped our world?

Government security, hospitals, financial institutions it's safe to say that software programs are today everywhere! Software programs have advanced to the extent that some business have had to cut major financial losses, Kodak was one of the main dominators within the camera industry with each year processing 150 million photographs however due to new pieces of software programs which are now more affordable than ever has resulted into an estimated 1.2 trillion photographs taken on smartphones in the US alone (2011).

Many people would used to relate a "selfie" to someone who was very much vain, however fast forward to 2014 and with the peak of social networking platforms of Snapchat and Instagram, it hasn't been more easier to share your drunken antics with the world.

Privacy concerns are also highlighted with popular software programs and with people more inclined to remove an app which can access your phone contacts and latest text messages (Facebook!), has society become more conscious with who is able to view their networking profile or family photos... Or have they just become paranoid with the latest newspaper headlines, enough to send a chill to anyone's thoughts.

Finally the introduction of GPS trackers now available to be installed onto any smartphone or tablet. Users are able to easily track their lost or stolen device at a touch of a button, however this may seem a brilliant online tool in some instances users are resorting to physical violence when tracking there device to a thief or even finding a few explicit photos uploaded via the cloud onto their device which was stolen! These software programs have of course assured consumers and with the introduction of "kill switches" soon to be released are consumers being put at risk, as over 400 mobile phones are stolen in London daily causing an evermore corrupt society or are these powerful software programs able to restore faith within society?

5 Ways that the Internet has changed society!

  • Crime this has created multimillion pound businesses which have snatched sales from industries including the film and clothing (piracy and counterfeit items).
  • Dating its a £2 billion industry and with 1 in 5 relationships blossoming online, its certainly impacted society!
  • Self diagnosis is happening more and more over the internet and with it being easier to make assumptions over your irrational symptoms, it can result into a panic or reassurance although this certainly cannot replace your GP.
  • Shopping half a billion pounds is spent a week in the UK on online shopping and with major corporations providing thousands of jobs in their UK warehouses, it must have benefited society greatly!
  • Emails can be sent within seconds and with practically no cost to sending each one, its certainly replacing the old fashioned letter by providing quickness and convenience within society!
