Section 3 - Networking

Serial jokes must be told bit by bit!

A network is when a group of computers or pieces of technology share the same resources for example sharing software. Generally computer networks are based around a single server, this carries out actions for the network and users.

With networking there are two different types. One being LAN, Local Area Network and the other WAN, Wide Area Network. These two different types of networks differentiate as LAN covers small networking areas (schools or an office) whereas WAN covers large surface areas with the Internet being WAN!

There are many benefits to an individual and business from computer networking as listed below:
  • In the long term being cost effective as devices can be shared and Software pricing can be reduced.
  • Files can be shared quickly and conveniently.
  • Data that has been created can be stored onto a server which increases security of the data.

Computer networking has evolved to beyond the imaginable with Lawrence G. Roberts and Johnson Merrill creating the worlds first WAN in 1965! A few years later in 1969 considered by one of the worlds first ever operational pack switching networks performed the longest ARPANET link performed by prestigious universities in California and Los Angeles. The ARPANET has essentially evolved into the internet of the past and as the years have progressed towards 1985 external networks were bringing continents including Europe and North America together and the amount of network gateways had increased rapidly! The pace of which technology had developed meant that in 1990 the use of ARPANET in universities and work places diminished resulting into newer networks taking over increasing capabilities and network speeds.

THE INTERNET

This piece of technological genius has truly defined the way that the human race goes about there daily life. This has enabled to slowly eradicate various methods of communication including telegrams and some would say even letters, with emails, social media and texting foreshadowing previous communication methods and which now enables people to quickly and conveniently contact each other.

The development of new networking infrastructures and devices constantly spurs on the desire from consumers of an even quicker, thinner and convenient piece of equipment with this the development of networking equipment is continuously being updated to meet the needs of consumers and expectations that the generation has now become used to.

"Computer science is one of the worst things that ever happened to either computers or science."
